Album:America - Heart

Oklahoma / May 4, 2012 / by Chris

This is a piece that has been around in my head for a very, very long time. It has gone through many iterations and has had different meanings for me over the years, but all of them seem to stem from the idea of the heart and expressing a true emotion that comes from some place below the surface. Every time I’ve tried to record it, I would try to come up with parts to go with the guitar. Piano, violin, flute, another guitar, ukulele, oboe – pretty much every instrument I’ve ever written for I have tried with this song. I also tried a few times (all disastrous) to write lyrics, but no matter what I tried nothing sounded right.

So this week, I’m presenting the simplest of songs: one acoustic guitar, one take, just me. I’ve decided that the universe is sending me some sort of message with this song. Either I’ve become too attached to this guitar part, in which case maybe getting this song out there will help me let go of it enough to open my mind to other parts, or this is one of those situations where I’m being reminded of what my voice teacher called the “KISS” principle: Keep it simple, stupid! Either way, I hope you enjoy this week’s piece: “Heart.”
