You Got On National TV. Now What?

This past Saturday we were on CBS's This Morning - our first national interview. It was awesome, and so much fun. That and our new gig with the Huffington Post has helped us get noticed, and has resulted in many kind words sent our way. Organizationally, our number-one mission is to make sure we're funded throughout the rest of the year. Even though coverage is good, how do you translate that into funding?

It's a tough question, and one that we are having quite a time with. None of us are professional fundraisers, and my experiences back in the summer were pretty dire in terms of a success rate for getting anyone to listen. Now, we have a product, and a proven track-record to run on.

The challenge, we are finding, is not whether or not people like our stuff, it's getting in front of those people in the first place. In the end, it's just the same as any other project, any other non-profit, the need for funds. We don't have the infrastructure or the organizational history to mount an effective grant-writing campaign, and friends and family can only do so much to get our name out there.

Much of our success in the realm of fundraising has been complete luck. We need to turn that into a skill. In non-profit-world, the amount we need to finish is paltry. To a bunch of young people who have a dynamite product but no experience in marketing or fundraising, $30,000 has way too many zeroes for our liking.
