A quick guide to our new website

As we launched our new website just over two weeks ago, I wanted to write a quick blog post explaining a little about it. So, either if this is your first time here or if you've been on but haven't yet been digging through the site, this is the guide for you.

When designing this website, we had to think carefully about its structure. We wanted to combine several different types of media into one site, without making it confusing or disorganized. We needed a place for our video profiles as well as the articles and photos to accompany them, and somewhere for our individual blogs and project-related posts. Added to this, we wanted to incorporate our Twitter feeds. With so many diffent authors and various media types, we wanted an easy to navigate and fun website.

So, to a brief explanation of the main parts:

Our homepage has our most recent profile piece displayed on the left, with a link below to all the profiles we've done thus far. The right-hand side of the page is a timeline of our most recent blog posts, photo albums, videos and tweets. Anything we film, write and photograph will be shown on the stream on the homepage. This way, whenever you go to bus52.com, you will always know what our most recent profile piece is, as well as being able to instantly catch up on what's been happening behind the scenes.

The main navigation for the website is at the top. This will help you find your way around, with links to our profile pieces, our projects and information about the team.

The filter bar on the left is there to help you find your way around the stream of posts on the right. If you want to see only videos in that stream, hit the video button and it will hide all posts that aren't videos. Hit it again and everything will re-appear. The same thing goes for the buttons to filter blog posts, photos and tweets. Also on the filter bar are our donate button (in case you're feeling generous) and the share buttons so that you can easily share our exciting adventures on Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

The other very important feature of our website is the footer. It's fixed to the bottom of your screen so that you can always see it. In the footer, we have a graphic that will show you which state we're in at the time, which states we've been to, and which states we have yet to visit. Clicking on an icon will take you to the profile and posts published while in that state. We also have our sponsor section in the footer. This is there so that you can see the great sponsors who are supporting Bus 52. The footer also contains our 'recents' bar. Here, we'll be giving you quick updates about what we're doing to keep ourselves entertained. If you click on it, it'll take you to a page with a catalog of all our 'recents'. We're hoping this means that you'll really feel a part of the journey, and might even give you some inspiration as to what book to read or which song to to listen to next.

We do hope you like it! We've tried to make it easy to use while keeping it interesting. You can navigate posts by author and by place, and the homepage will always keep you informed of the most recent events, so we hope you'll always find something interesting at which to have a look. I've not explained everything in nearly as much detail as I could have (it might reduce you to tears) but I hope that'll mean you'll just explore further on your own.

Please let us know what you think about the website - you can email us at hello@bus52.com or go to our Facebook and Twitter pages to send us your thoughts. Also, please do keep spreading the word about Bus 52. The more people know about us, the more will get to know about us!
