New Orleans Jazz

New Orleans Jazz

New Orleans is a city that, if nothing else, lives up to its reputation in every way. I went hoping to experience some good Louisiana jazz, and found a city with music coming out of every pore and crevice.

The entire mood of the city is focused toward the nightlife – walking around the city mid-afternoon, it felt a lot like what I imagine 6 am looks like in most other cities, or 11 am Saturday morning on a college campus. Once the sun went down though, the streets came alive and the music started to pour out of every door on Bourbon Street. I particularly enjoyed going to the Royal Sonesta Hotel and listening to some fantastic live jazz at Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse – there were many great places to listen to music, but this one had a great atmosphere and the quality and energy of the music was absolutely phenomenal.

After a few nights, it was time to head north for Arkansas (but not before an adventurous last drive through town – the streets are not built for a bus Stanley’s size!). I will definitely be coming back to New Orleans after this trip is done – there is enough music going on there to keep me occupied for quite a long time.
