Baoteng's Cajun Creations Restaurant

2 19th Street North  Bessemer, AL 35020

Walking into Boateng's Cajun Creations feels like entering someone's home. The dining area is relaxed and comfortable. The waiters, chefs, and owners are friendly. The food is their soul.

From the outside Boateng's does not look extravagant. There are zero neon signs hanging off the roof. There is very little decoration crowding the windows and outside walls. There is no need to dress up a place that lets the food speak for itself! Ritzy lights and wall-covering signs are only a mask for terrible food. Boateng's knows what I am talking about.

If you are in town walking around make sure you take the time to walk by this place. The smell of food emanating from the structure will engulf your nose, causing you to stop dead in your tracks to enjoy the wonderful aroma.

If that doesn't get you to walk through the doors and try the food, I don't know what will.

We all ordered a few different items from the menu and shared a few bites of each.

The jumbalaya is a must have if you are looking for a filling lunch or dinner. The rice and meat are cooked and seasoned perfectly. Rob and Amy Wallace easily wiped their bowls clean once we'd all had a taste.

If you have never tried fried green tomatoes, put it on your to-do list. I'd be jealous if you are lucky enough to try Boateng's as your first. They are that good. The tomatoes are fresh and the crispy outside contains very little grease. Topped with crab and homemade sauce, the fried green tomatoes could easily stand alone as a meal for two.

Chicken and sausage gumbo. My taste buds are still thanking me for ordering this off the menu. If you are even remotely a fan of gumbo this is a must have. I have no idea what ingredients were used in the making of this dish and I don't even want to know. It contained aspects of both savory and spicy. The sausage and chicken could not have been cooked better. My hat is off to this dish.

I am a huge fan of shrimp prepared any way. I had to order the slow boiled shrimp. After receiving my plate I also met the cook who followed the waiter on the way to our table. Unable to fill the entire order of shrimp required for the dish, the chef made me a side of shrimp and grits. Sir, I do not know your name and I did not get a chance to shake your hand, but thank you. That was the best part of my entire meal and if I ever return to Boateng's I will be ordering an entire bowl.

If you are in Bessemer, and you do not eat at this restaurant, you are doing yourself a displeasure. I hope Boateng's stays just as it is for as long as possible. I was there for one night and I can tell you it is a rock for the community. The dining room was full while we were there and there was not one unhappy customer.
