Blackout!

Blackout!

As a kid, I loved power outages. I'm sure my mother loved them less so, but I loved walking around the house with flashlights, lighting candles and, on cold fall nights like we have now, a fire in the fireplace. Even before I became the technological nut I am now there was something great about turning off the TV and reading a book.

I haven't lost my love of the occasional power outage, but I have to say they are considerably less fun on the bus. Our work kind of depends on a fair number of electronics, and in my case my recording gear requires actual electric current - I can't charge it up and run without power like I can a laptop or phone. Last Friday I had planned to do a whole lot of work on upcoming music. When the rain started to fall, I figured I would just wait it out (nothing against rain, but it is quite noisy and not conducive to recording). Waiting turned out to be a good idea, as the power went out shortly thereafter. If I had been in the middle of something, I might have been upset; as it was, I simply enjoyed the dark for a little bit, then packed up my gear and went into the bus to read.
